Lexus of Richmond Leadership Award Week 17 – Alexis Hawbaker


Lexus of Richmond’s week 17 nominee for the Leadership Award is Alexis Hawbaker from Cosby High School. Currently ranked 5th in her class with a 4.83 GPA, she is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the Science National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. As a junior, she received AP Academic Awards for both United States History and Biology as well as the Dartmouth Book Award. As a sophomore, Alexis attended the National Youth Leadership Forum: Medicine at UNC Chapel Hill, and she was chosen to attend the Presidential Inauguration Leadership Summit. During her third year, Alexis was nominated for the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists Award of Excellence as well as being selected to attend the Congress of Future Medical Leaders at Harvard.

While attending Cosby, Alexis has been a member of the Cross Country team since freshman year. Her time on the team however, has been plagued with injury. During her 9th grade year, Alexis spent the whole season in the pool training and working through injuries. She came out just in time to run in the championship meets and then States. As a sophomore, she had knee surgery, and then as a junior Alexis ran half the season before coming upon a foot injury. Finally as a sophomore, she was unable to compete due to foot surgery. Throughout the adversity, Alexis has received Varsity Awards in school and was even named to the top 100 runners in the state as a freshman. Additionally, she was selected as a junior to represent the USA cross country team in Australia, however she was unable to compete due to her injuries.

Active in her school and church community, Alexis has been involved in multiple groups and organizations through her high school career. She is a four year member of Cosby’s Health Occupations Students of America club and a three year member of the TGIF (Christian Fellowship) Club. She has also been in Legacy Club as well as Beta Club while in school. At Commonwealth Chapel, Alexis is an active participant in the youth group and the student leadership team.

Alexis has participated in numerous activities in her community including mission trips in Virginia where she helped renovate homes for the needy and elderly. She also volunteers in the children’s ministry at her church. She has been a volunteer/shadow for physical therapists at the CJW Sports Medicine at the Boulders. Recently, Alexis began shadowing a home health physical therapist. Previously she was a tour guide for the Health Science Specialty Center as well as a crutch/mentor for them.

Alexis has won a dinner for two and is now in the running for the $10,000 scholarship.
