Our week 4 nominee for the Lexus of Richmond Leadership Award is Maddison Furman of St. Christopher’s School. Currently in the top 10% of his class, Maddison has a 4.4 GPA, is an AP Scholar with Honor, and has been on the High Honor List every semester since freshman year. In 2015 he received a Gold Medal in the National Spanish Exam for being in the top 99% of the participants. Over this past summer Maddison attended the Virginia Governor’s Summer Foreign Language Academy at Washington & Lee University. This three week program allowed a complete Spanish immersion where he was able to develop his Spanish speaking skills.
Having been a pitcher on the Varsity Baseball team at St. Christopher’s since sophomore year, Maddison will be the captain of the team for his senior season. After his junior year, he was named a part of the First Team All Prep and the Second Team All State. As a sophomore, Maddison made a verbal commitment to play baseball at Virginia Commonwealth University. He has also played on the Evoshield Seminoles, a showcase team, since 2015. Additionally Maddison played basketball at St. Chris for his first two years of high school.
Maddison has been heavily involved in various outlets through St. Christopher’s. He has been in student council since 2016 and is currently the Vice President. As a middle school mentor, Maddison will spend time with a middle schooler to help the student navigate upper school and serve as a role model figure. Similarly, he is the head peer advisor where upperclassmen help freshmen become accustomed to high school. Maddison is a $100 for 100 team captain. This group raises money to provide Richmond area children with a $100 gift card to Dick’s Sporting Goods around the holiday season.
Since freshman year, Maddison has spent time with the St. ChristoCURES program. The student organization raises money for cancer research for the Massey Cancer Center and to raise cancer awareness. The members additionally run the Monument 10K in support of cancers patients and survivors. With the Saturday Academy Program at St. Chris, Maddison and other St. Chris high school students spend time with children from Richmond city schools on Saturday mornings. They help tutor the kids with schoolwork and then play games such as frisbee or dodgeball.
Maddison has won a dinner for two and is now in the running for the $10,000 scholarship.
