Lexus of Richmond’s 24th Leadership Award Week 10 – Katy Werwath

The 10th nominee for the Lexus of Richmond Leadership Award is Katy Werwath of Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School. With a 4.86 GPA, Katy is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and the Latin & Science Honor Societies. Having scored a perfect 5 on all six of her AP exams, Katy is an AP Scholar with Distinction. As a junior she received a Gold Medal on the National Latin Exam and the Wellesley Book Award. Katy was selected as a National Merit Scholarship Commended Student during her senior year.

A four year member of the UNICEF Club, Katy has served as the Vice President and the Event Coordinator. She is a founding member of the club, and she helped organize a pen pal program for teens in Makindu Children’s Center (orphanage in Kenya). Since 2012 Katy has participated in John Hopkins Center for Talented Youth summer programs. Katy attended the Stanford University High School Summer College residential program in 2017 to study Abnormal Psychology and Introduction to Neuroscience. Over the summer of 2018 she was a National Institutes of Health Intern (Generalized Anxiety Disorder Study), and she will return for the summer following her graduation. As a senior Katy is spending time with the Virginia Institute for Psychiatric and Behavioral Genetics, working on a Juvenile Anxiety Study. Katy is currently working as a VCU Dean’s Early Research Initiative Fellow. While in the College of Engineering, Katy is researching how to best grow blood vessels outside the body for use in coronary artery bypass surgery to treat heart attacks.

As a four year varsity member of Maggie Walker’s tennis team, Katy will be a captain for her senior season. Every year of high school Katy has been seeded in the top 5. Throughout her time on the time Katy has helped lead tennis clinics with her teammates. As a freshman in 2016, the team became 2A Regional Champions. The team became back-to-back 2A State Champions in 2017 and 2018 during Katy’s sophomore and junior seasons.

During her time in high school Katy has been involved in various community service projects around RVA. Over the summer of 2016 Katy participated in a Proper Walk through Great Rift Valley in Kenya. She visited Makindu Children’s Center then walked 120 miles over 10 days. This walk raised $5,000 for medical, educational, and nutritional support for the orphaned children. Since her sophomore year, Katy has volunteered for the Democratic Party of Virginia. She has assisted with the Northam gubernatorial campaign and the Spanberger congressional campaign. For three years Katy spent time with Hands On RVA at the Goochland Food Pantry, Richmond Public Schools Teacher Store, and the Church Hill urban garden.

Katy has won a dinner for two and is now in the running for the $10,000 scholarship.
