Lexus of Richmond’s 25th Leadership Award, Week 5 – Sully Beck

Sully Beck of St. Christopher’s School is Lexus of Richmond’s fifth scholar athlete nominated for the Lexus Leadership Award Scholarship. Sully is currently tied for the first in his class with a 4.7 GPA. He scored a 1540 out of 1600 on the SAT exam, and he has received 4 Perfect AP exam scores earning the title AP Scholar with Distinction. Sully is a Commended National Merit Scholar. St. Chris faculty selected Sully to be one of their nominees for the Jefferson Scholar Program at UVA. He was also chosen by school faculty for the Jefferson Book Award at the end of his junior year. Sully is a Rensselaer Medalist, which is a top science award at St. Chris. He attended the Summer Residential Governor’s School for Medicine and Health Sciences: a month long program for 26 Virginia students in the classroom and shadowing healthcare professionals.

Outside the classroom, Sully is involved with numerous organizations at St. Christopher’s. As a member of the school’s Honor Council, he is the group secretary and serves as the vice-chair. With the STC Investment Club he is currently serving as the President and was the treasurer as a junior. He is the President of Saints for Environmental Awareness and Action and a member of the Environmental Youth Council of Virginia. As a member of the English 10, Sully is in a select group of students who read literature and hold discussions on their readings. Sully is a member of the Battle of the Brains Quiz Bowl team, and he is a peer advisor to a current freshman. He participates with a Massey Cancer Fundraising Team for cancer research at the VCU Massey Cancer Center. Being a member of the Boy Scouts of America, Sully is an Eagle Scout. He also serves a Quartermaster, Troop Guide and Historian for his troop.

Sully is an accomplished runner for St. Chris as a member of the Cross Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track Teams. A four year cross country runner, Sully is the Captain for his senior season. In 2017 and 2018 the team was named both the Prep League Champions and the VISAA Division 1 State Champs. The team won the 2018 Pole Green VC Classic. For his 2018 and 2019 season he was a part of the Patrick Henry Relay Champion team and helped set a course record. Sully received the Buerlein Distance Running Award from his coaches, and he has been recognized for All Prep and All State the past two seasons. With the outdoor track team, he helped win the 2019 Prep League Championship and the 2019 VISAA Division 1 State Championship. A four year indoor track member, Sully was a part of winning the Prep League Championships in 2018 and 2019 as well as the 2019 VISAA State Championship. At the Prep League Championship he took first place in the 4×800 (2018) and first place in the 3200m (2019). Sully claimed a 3rd place finish for the 1600m in the 2019 State Meet.

As a member of the Boy Scouts of America, Sully recently completed his Eagle Scout Project. Over the course of 50+ hours Sully planned and oversaw the construction of an outdoor classroom at Greenfield Elementary School. Through St. Chris’ environmental awareness group, Sully has participated in bimonthly James River Park System clean ups. He has given over 25 volunteer hours to Hooligan’s Rest, a shelter that rescues dogs who are about to be euthanized at kill shelters. Sully additionally has spent over 20 hours with a school in the East End of Richmond.

Sully has won a dinner for two and is now in the running for the $25,000 scholarship.
