The sixth scholar athlete for the Lexus of Richmond Leadership Award Scholarship is Mary Caroline Heinen of Maggie L Walker Governor’s School. With a 4.6 GPA, she is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, English Honor Society, Chinese Honor Society, Latin Honor Society, and the Science Honor Society. Mary Caroline scored a 1540 out of 1600 on her SAT exam and a 800 on the Math SAT 2. She is an AP Scholar with Distinction and a National Merit Semifinalist. As a junior Mary Caroline and her team entered the Math Modeling the Future National Competition in Chicago and they took 3rd Place.
As a senior, Mary Caroline is a VCU DERI Fellow in the NanoNuclear Engineering Lab. With DERI, she is focused on the effectiveness of nonmaterial cladding and surface roughness on the safety of rods in nuclear reactors. They will work to use accident tolerant fuels to prevent future nuclear disasters. As a member of Maggie Walker’s We the People Team, she presents a paper and answers questions focused on constitutional and historical evidence while working towards the national competition. As a sophomore, Mary Caroline co-founded the Charity Miles Club where they organized a shoe drive for underprivileged children. She is the currently the Co-President of the Mu Alpha Theta chapter. In her time at Maggie Walker, Mary Caroline is also a member of the Math Club, Latin Club, Badminton Club and the Chinese Culture Club.
A three sport Varsity athlete since freshman year, Mary Caroline is a 4 time cross country, indoor track and outdoor track participant. She was named the All Metro Girl’s Cross Country Runner of the Year in 2017 and 2018. As a junior Mary Caroline was selected as both the USATF Virginia 15-16 Youth Cross Country Runner of the Year and the Gatorade Virginia Cross Country Runner of the Year. She is the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Champion of 2017 and 2018. In 2019 she became the New Balance Nationals Emerging Elite 2 Mile Champion. In August 2018 Mary Caroline was recognized as Star 100.9’s High School All Star Track Athlete. She is a two time Richmond Times Dispatch Scholar Athlete of the Month for November 2017 and December 2018. Over her high school career Mary Caroline has claimed 14 individual Regional Championships, 11 individual State Championships and she holds school records for: the cross country 5k, indoor 3200 and 5k, and outdoor 1600 and 3200.
Mary Caroline has spent her time giving back to her community through several local organizations. She has spent five years with Little Sisters of the Poor by assisting with paperwork and database entering. She has been a Student Ambassador for Maggie Walker where she assists around the school and their events. Mary Caroline has been a volunteer for the Model UN Conference held at her school. She has given time to her church, St. Benedictine, as a Lector and Altar Server for 8 years. Additionally, Mary Caroline has recently volunteered at both the Richmond SPCA and the Retreat Doctor’s Hospital.
Mary Caroline has won a dinner for two and is now in the running for the $25,000 scholarship.
