Lexus of Richmond’s week 5 nominee for the Leadership Award Scholarship is Joe Beck of St. Christopher’s School. Having a current GPA of 4.6, Joe scored a perfect score of 1600 on the SAT exam. He has received 4 perfect scores on final AP exams making him an AP Scholar with Distinction. Joe ended sophomore and junior year with the top GPA of his class. He was inducted into the National Spanish Honor Society following 10th grade. Joe has received accolades including the Harvard Book Award and being St Chris’ Jefferson Scholar nominee. He is also a National Merit Semifinalist.
Throughout his time at St. Christopher’s, Joe has been involved in numerous clubs and organizations. Joe is a co-founder and co-president of the Investment Club at St. Chris. Since his sophomore year this group has focused on basic personal finance and investment strategies, and they manage a $10k portfolio together. Joe is in his 2nd year as a Peer Advisor to the freshmen as a way to help the transition into high school. He is currently in his 3rd year of the Quiz Bowl Team where Joe is serving as the captain, and the group will compete on Battle of the Brains. In the summer of 2018 Joe held an internship with Lawton Park Capital Management where he worked with an analyst to research stocks and develop an investment thesis plus make stock recommendations.
A four year member of the Cross Country team, Joe is a two year captain. In 2017 the team competed and won several titles including: Pole Green XC Classic Champions (small school varsity division), Fork Union Cross Country Invitational Champions, Prep League Champions, and the VISAA Division 1 State Champions. In 2018 Joe finished the Pole Green XC Classic in 4th place. Joe has been a starter on the Varsity Tennis team since 10th grade, and will be a captain as a senior. In 2016 the team won the Prep League Championship. He is also a member of the Indoor Track team where in 2016 and 2017, they won the Prep League Championship and the State Championship in 2016.
Joe is certainly no stranger to giving time to his community. He has spent roughly 30 hours volunteering for FeedMore: an organization that delivers food/meals to those in need in the Central Virginia area. He has also spent 20-25 hours of time with classmates volunteering in Richmond’s East End. Through his time as a Boy Scout, Joe worked on numerous community service projects. Most impressive on this list would be his Eagle Scout Project. He spent over 55 hours of diligent planning and working to restore an outdoor classroom and learning garden at Greenfield Elementary School.
Joe has won a dinner for two and is now in the running for the $10,000 scholarship.
