Richard is an outstanding student-athlete, for which he has received a great deal of recognition. With a 4.6 GPA and a score of 2280 on his SATs, he is an AP Scholar with Distinction, a National Merit Scholar Semi-Finalist, a Continental Calculus Contest high scorer, first place winner of his school’s Cyber Foundation Award, and a recipient of the University of Virginia’s Jefferson Book Award to name a few of his accolades.  Richard has been active outside of the classroom in the Boy Scouts (now an Eagle Scout with Bronze Palms and a member of the Order of the Arrow Brotherhood), as a member of his school’s Robotics Club and as a member of the Battle of the Brains team. He has a passion for music and is quite an accomplished harp player. As a member of the American Youth Harp Ensemble, Richard has performed in Vienna and Salzburg, Austria, at the World Harp Congress in Sydney, Australia, the Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, and at Carnegie Hall. Also athletically gifted, he ran varsity cross-country and varsity track for his school; but his real passion is for swimming and diving. He is the team captain of his varsity swim team, as well as his varsity dive team which was named 2nd Team All-Metro and placed in the top 10 in National Championships. Richard gives back to the community by volunteering his time for a number of programs, such as CARITASVA Department of Parks and Recreation Youth Conservation Corps, and Camp Selah Ministries, among others. Additionally, he plays harp at various churches, hospitals, nursing homes and rehabilitation centers throughout the region. In 2012, Richard was named one of Style Weekly’s “16 Under 16” in recognition of his numerous achievements.

Richard has won a dinner for two at Fleming’s Steakhouse and is now in the running for the $10,000 scholarship.
